Led by George Henry's first place finish with a time of 25:13, the Owls toppled the 1972 winner, Westminster College, and outclassed the rest of the teams participating. Team scores were as follows: Tarkio 40, Westminster 53, School of the Ozarks 66, William Jewell 87, and Central Methodist 108. Dwight Pickering took fifth place with a time of 26:05 and Dennis Abrams captured seventh with a time of 26:22 over the five mile course. Rick Staback and Bob Friedle placed 13th and 14th while Russ Palmer finished in 21st.
Team Accomplishments: In addition to the District Championship, Tarkio won the Heart of America Athletic Conference Championship, the Westminster College, Invitational, the Benedictine Invitational, the Nebraska Apple-Jack Meet, and were 5-3 in dual meets. Their only loses came at the hands of the much larger NCAA Central Missouri State University and Northwest Missouri State University team.

Tarkio College set four district records and tied one in winning the NAIA District 16 Indoor Track Championship at Lexington, MO.
The track men scored a total of 73 points to take the meet, far outdistancing second place School of the Ozarks, who had 45 points.
District records set by the Owls included the 880 yard relay won by Bob Rudrow, Ed Hill, Bruce Barnett and Walt Knox in 1:37.4; the mile relay by Dan Hodges, Knox, Barnett and Doug Stokes in 3:36.5; the shot put by Brian Criswell, 48'11"; and the 600 yard dash by Knox in 1:15.9. Barnett also tied the district record in the 60 yard high hurdles with a time of :07.6. Other first place winners in the meet included Cal Robinson in the 60 yard dash , and Pete Ermish in the 880 yard run (2:03.5). Russ Palmer and George Henry place third and fourth in two mile. Bruce Gilbert was third in the 1000 yard run.

By winning the meet, the women's team qualified for the NAIA National Cross Country Chapionships that were held in Kenosha, WI on November 18, 1989.
