Season Recap: The MCAU conference meet was held at William Jewell College. The distance was four miles and the temperature was 23 degrees. Graceland won the title with 39 points, Westminster was second with 62, TC was third with 64, William Jewell was fourth with 87, and Culver Stockton was fifth with 93 points. Senior Jim Buchanan ran 19:55, Jim Moyle placed 9th, Jim Thomas placed 18th, Dave Mount placed 24th and John Vajas placed 27th.

The Tarkio Owl Cross Country team successfully defended their Heart of America Athletic Conference Championship by literally running away with the meet. The closest team to Tarkio was William Jewell who had 63 points, while Graceland had 65 points and Tarkio had 25 points. The Owls were paced by ever dependable leader George Henry who finished first with a time of 25:35. Dwight Pickering, the student coach for the team finished third with a time of 26:23. Bob Friedle finished fifth with a time of 26:39 while Russ Palmer finished in seventh place with a time of 27:03. Dennis Abrams rounded out the scoring placing in ninth overall with a time of 27:18.

Led by George Henry's first place finish with a time of 25:13, the Owls toppled the 1972 winner, Westminster College, and outclassed the rest of the teams participating. Team scores were as follows: Tarkio 40, Westminster 53, School of the Ozarks 66, William Jewell 87, and Central Methodist 108. Dwight Pickering took fifth place with a time of 26:05 and Dennis Abrams captured seventh with a time of 26:22 over the five mile course. Rick Staback and Bob Friedle placed 13th and 14th while Russ Palmer finished in 21st.
Team Accomplishments: In addition to the District Championship, Tarkio won the Heart of America Athletic Conference Championship, the Westminster College, Invitational, the Benedictine Invitational, the Nebraska Apple-Jack Meet, and were 5-3 in dual meets. Their only loses came at the hands of the much larger NCAA Central Missouri State University and Northwest Missouri State University teams.
